T-Shirt Design

I have been asked to carry out research to find out people’s preferences for different personalised t-shirt designs of 3 artists, Roy Lichtenstein, Julian Opie and Andy Warhol.I will be carrying out research by asking 10 people around the college to fill out a questionnaire to get feedback on what they would prefer in a t-shirt design.

In this task, I will be researching the three artists styles, along with how to edit images to look like their work. For the research, I will be using both primary and secondary research. The methods I will be focusing on will be questionnaires, books and internet.

Roy Lichtenstein

Roy Lichtenstein was an American pop artist. The work he created defined the premise of pop art through parody. Inspired by comic strips, Lichtenstein produced precise compositions that documented while they parodied. His work was influenced by popular advertising and the comic book style.

Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol was an American artist, director and producer. He became famous for exploring popular culture in his work.Warhol used bright colours and silk-screening techniques to produce artwork on photographers of celebrities, such as Marilyn Monroe. As well as prints, Warhol also made films, digital artwork, paintings and sculptures.

Julian Opie

Julian Opie is a British artist known for his depictions of portraits, landscapes and figures. The style he uses is a blend of Pop Art and Minimalism. The features are created by thick black outlines and filled in with solid colours.

Questionnaire

I carried out the research on people’s opinions and responses towards personalised t-shirts by making a questionnaire.

Questionnaire Results

Based on my research, I will be designing the Roy Lichtenstein style on a black standard t-shirt for the females and for the males it will be on black, green and white polo shirts. The Julian Opie style will be a unisex shirt. I will design this on a black standard t-shirt as they were the overall majority responses.Andy Warhol was the least favoured artist, but I will also design the shirt for unisex on a standard black t-shirt. My questionnaire only had 10 responses. If I asked more people, it would have been more reliable.

Artist Style Tutorials

I went on YouTube to find videos showing me how to edit my own images to look like the style of the three artists.

Roy Lichtenstein

This was the tutorial I followed to create my image. The video guided me step by step on how to edit an image in the Roy Lichtenstein style. It was a helpful and easy video to follow.

Julian Opie

This is the tutorial I followed to create my edit. I found it extremely helpful and it was simple to follow along with.

Andy Warhol

This is the tutorial I followed to make my edit. It was very helpful and easy to follow.

Final T-Shirt Designs

Conclusion

Within the task, I used both primary and secondary research. I used primary by handing out questionnaires and asking for feedback, I used secondary by researching information and tutorials on the internet.I tried using the library within college to find information about the artists as another research method, however I couldn’t gather anything from there. The tutorials I used within this project were extremely helpful and easy to follow along with and understand.I could have done more research within the t-shirt printing as I am sure there is many different companies and websites out there that could do this.Overall, I am happy with the outcome of the designs. My favourite is probably the Andy Warhol design because of the colours I created, as well as the way it stands out on the black shirt. My least favourite is probably the Julian Opie design. I like Opie’s style, but it isn’t really something I would tend to like as much as other styles.
