For this assignment I was given a brief to redesign 3 movie posters, researching one movie every two weeks. I researched different techniques used within movie posters.
Negative Space
I really like how negative space is used within movie posters. If used properly, the poster may not use up every space available, however, the image will speak volume and be easy to recognise. Even without the title, the majority of people will know the poster above is Snow White, due to the apple and the two silhouettes 'bitten' in to it.
Double Exposure
The double exposure technique is probably my most favoured style. I like the fact, within this poster, they have gotten one of the main characters and used the technique to add the other mains and some scenes from the show. I also like the detail at the bottom using the trees and cliff, adding shape to the silhouette.
Minimal
The minimal technique is probably one of the easiest to do. I like how simple but effective it can be.I will most likely use this technique within one of my of my designs.
My chosen movies/shows were High School Musical, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and IT.
I started by designing my IT poster.
I wanted to make it so it involved the red balloon and paper boat that everyone who has heard or seen the film knows about.
In my sketchbook, I started sketching a few ideas down and also tried a concept making a paper boat out of newspaper and sticking it onto the page with red balloons coming from the boat.
In the end, I decided to go with the design with the red balloon and a silhouette of the paper boat inside of it.
When it came to the text, I was wanting to keep it a traditional sort of style.
This was the easiest of my posters to make as all I did was create the balloon with shapes and the boat with lines.
I decided to add a black and white gradient in the background to give it a sort of eary/horror look to it.
I am somewhat happy with how it turned out but now I have finished this, I think I would be able to do a better job as my illustrator skills are a lot better since I made this and I would be able to create a better design.
My next chosen poster to design was for Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
I made a couple ideas, one including a comic sort of style which included the main characters with the title going across the screen, however I decided to go with the other idea which included the police badge used within the show.
I had to trace the inside image of the badge on illustrator and I did find it difficult to do, however when I was finished, I was happy with the outcome.
I was going to add a basic gradient again for the background, however I found an effect which can take the colours used within the image and make them into a background.
I liked how this turned out, it sort of looks like police lights in the background which I think adds an effect.
I do like how this one turned out, but again due to my skills increasing, I could probably now do a better design.
In the feedback I was given, everyone could tell from the poster is was showing a police show, which is what I was going for.
I could of made it more comical, as it is a funny show, however I wouldn't know how to work that into a poster without it being too informal.
My final poster was for High School Musical.
This is the one I came up with the most ideas for. One of them included using typography and make a couple letters into basketballs, microphones and music notes. I kept them simple as I wanted to take a minimalism approach.
After getting feedback, the majority preferred the famous Wildcats paw print idea.
I wanted to keep the colours red and white as that is the Wildcats colours, and it would be easy for people to recognise.
I also added a drop shadow behind the paw and text to lift them off the page.
I would definitely do this one a lot better and maybe make it more detailed, however I was okay with how it came out.
