Animation Audio

I have been given 4 animation shorts to choose from which I need to create audio for.

I need to research other animation shorts to develop an understanding of what is needed. I listened to the animations and wrote down what is happening. I will use this research to help develop ideas for my own piece.

Before I started on the audio for my chosen animation, I did some research on animation sounds.

I found a couple animation shorts on YouTube and wrote down the sounds I could hear being created within the video.

The first one I found is called ‘The Box’.

  • Hands on the back of chair

  • Pattering of the mouse’s feet

Foley Sounds

Foley sounds are the recreating of everyday sound effects used within film and video, along with other media in post-production to enhance audio quality. The recreated sounds can be anything from footsteps to door opening and closing and glass breaking. If the Foley sounds are done well enough, they will go unnoticed by the audience, it also helps create a sense of reality within the scene. Movies would feel uncomfortable and unnaturally quiet without any of these crucial background noises.

The Foley artists recreate the realistic ambient sounds that the film portrays. The sounds can also be used to over up any unwanted sounds that appear during filming, such as traffic or passing planes.

I watched a couple videos about Foley sounds of how they can be used and how much of a different sound makes to a movie.

I will be using as many Foley sounds as I can during my audio.

Third Party Sounds

Third Party Sounds are music or sounds downloaded from a website, with permission to use due to copyright reasons.

There are two websites I can use for when I need music and any extra sounds, Incompetech and Freesound.

My animation audio

Out of the animation options, I chose ‘beans’.

I produced a list of sounds I need to include.

I went around college creating sounds and recording them with sound recorders. As it was snowing, I used the sound of walking on that for the gravel sounds. I also used the squeaking of electric doors for the door spinning.

I managed to get some machine sounding noises from the cars driven around college, which seemed to go okay. Along with that, I used snow being thrown on the ground for the splatter noise when the beans explode, I made the explosion sounds by banging a locker.

I had to get noises for the saw, screwdriver, spanner and blinds online through a Third-Party source as I was not able to get those sounds myself.

With the final cut, I was happy with the outcome, however I could have done better by making more sounds, like for the passing of the plate and sizzling.

After watching the other student’s animation audios, I realised I should have added more sounds, as said before, and try make the transitions smoother instead of them being so sudden. If I had to do this again, I would know where to improve and make it even better.
